African Stamp celebrating Freddie
Russian Queen Stamp from Batum
This controversial stamp
was released on the 1st June 1999 in the UK as part of the millenium collection.
It belongs to 'The Entertainers's Tale' Freddie's stamp
is one of the four featured in this set.
There were two reasons for the
controversy surrounding the release of this stamp:
Roger could be seen (only just) in the background, and no living person apart
from the Queen is allowed to feature on British postage
stamps.
And also there were objections because some people didn't approve of Freddie's lifestyle.
However, the Post Office pointed out that the Queen had approved all choices,
and they were proud to stand by their choice of subjects for the stamps!
